The garage door that has intermittent malfunction could have many causes. We know all about garage doors – spring repair, garage door installation, garage door repair, panel replacement, sensor replacement, etc. Any time your door or lock is damaged, you have an uncertainty of safety. Here are some common causes of such an inconsistent running garage door along with some troubleshooting pointers you can try.
Common Garage Door Problems
When garage doors work at times, but at other times do not, check on these usual suspects:
Remote device: Your remote-control device may have low or dead batteries in it. A battery for a garage door remote typically lasts around two years.
Physical obstruction: One possible cause of this error message is that the motor received this error signal because of mechanical or electrical issues plaguing the motor.
Garage door locks: It is easy to accidentally hit the lock button on the operation panel of your garage door.
Lost connection: Sometimes the remote may seem broken, but it loses the programming that connects it to the door opener.
Signal interference: Problems have arisen with radio frequency (RF) interference that produces disturbance from the remote and the transmitter in the garage door opener. This may be a case of another related electronic device operating on the same frequency close to it. If your remote device operates close up but not from further away, it may mean that RF interference is the culprit.
Receiver board malfunction: If you have door operations issues from both the remote and the wall-mounted panel, it would be with the receiver board.
Electrical wire damage: The wiring between the safety sensor and wall panel to the motor of the garage door opener is cut off or destroyed.
Troubleshooting Tips for Garage Door
With this DIY troubleshooting advice, you could save yourself the price of having to pay a service call:
Replace the batteries: Always your first port of call is to change the batteries. If you call a technician, their first question will probably be: Have you tried replacing the batteries?
Check the antenna: Inspect the door opener’s antenna for debris or damage. In many instances, simply wiping it down with a dry cloth will suffice to clear the obstruction.
Check the operation panel: The lock button on the garage door’s operation panel should toggle on and off. Hit the button once, and then step outside to try the remote control again.
Reprogram the remote control: On the garage door opener, look for the “learn” button. Press and hold it down until you see the light flashing. Now, the garage door should open and close with the remote.
Eliminate any sources of RF interference: Search your house for objects that could be causing radio frequency interference. Security lights, battery chargers, and wireless doorbells usually fall into this category. Unplug any of these devices one at a time to see if disconnecting them changes your garage door’s operation. This blog has more on dealing with RF interference.
Reset the receiver board: To reset the receiver board, power off the door opener at the mains and disconnect the two motor wires from the opener. Then repower the machine. Clear all the memories and reprogram all the remote devices. Now pull the power plug to the garage door opener and connect the two wires again. Try testing using a remote control to operate the door.
Attach the outside wiring: Open the photo eye unit around the sensor and see whether any wires have become disconnected or cut. For a cut wire, strip insulation and reattach it. Make sure you plug the wires into the correct terminals on the back of the motor. Do not expose any wires to allow fraying or pinch under any circumstances.
If the garage door is still acting like that even after following all these methods or if you are not sure about meddling with components of your opener, then don’t waste any precious moments.
